Beginner Tutorial For WebsiteFlippers
The whole game is to make Google trustyou.
If you are a website flipper, you may wonder how those sellers build a site from scratch. This article is a step-by-step guide to do that with the example of an affiliate marketing site.
Step #1 Decide YourNiche
This is the hardest step for beginners because of how subjective it can be, especially if you also want to build things for passion more thanmoney.
However, with your personal interests and experience on the side, you can start by searching for the products you want to promote because, in the end, your affiliate marketing business brings you income by selling other people’s products. For example, I’m a YouTuber/Writer/Machine Learning Engineer/Consultant/Wife/Chinese. Hence, products that interest me are cameras, camera sliders, mic, lights, notebooks, books, digital drawing boards, speech training programs, coding events, networking access, makeup, Hanfu, earrings, kitchenware, coffee, etc.
Just look at your shopping history onAmazon.
Step #2 Familiarize With WebsiteBuilders
You can use easy website builders such as Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, etc. The problem is that they are usually more expensive and less customizable.
For that reason, you can use WordPress, Webflow, or Oxygen. You can read the detailed discussion in this article: WordPress, Webflow, Or Oxygen, Which One To Use?, but we will continue with WordPress because 43% of websites are built with it and it’s good enough for ourpurpose.
Step #3 Set Up The Site (WordPress As AnExample)
You can use Hostinger for hosting. When buying a domain, always choose.com whenever possible because people find other domains sketchy, and the conversion rate drops when using other domains. Research shows the shorter the name, the more traffic the site has. Good to purchase a backup andSSL.
On WordPress, delete all useless plugins to declutter the dashboard. Then choose and install a theme. Choose Elemontor as the page builder and choose a template. Update the content to match your business. When you choose an image, try to use a small file size for quick loading. Update the pages you don’t need on the WordPress dashboard tab “Pages.” This change won’t automatically populate until you update the menu structure under the “Appearance” tab.
Great plugins to install are “Importer,” “Yoast SEO,” “Wordfence,” and “MonsterInsight.” Don't have too many plugins; keep it under six so your development and maintenance won’t getmessy.
The “Pages” tab is for the overall website structure, “Posts” tab is for the actual articles. To continue on the farm example, you can Google “grass seed,” see what other people write and maybe create a blog on “The Best Grass Seed For Texas Lawns.” We can build this post with Elementor Editor.
Step #4 ResearchKeywords
Let’s start with clear expectations. If you just start creating affiliate websites, the baseline for writing blogs and ranking them is you won’t get much traffic in the first three months. When you start with a brand-new website, you may expect to get a few hundred hits per month by the end of the third month. Maybe by month 6, your site will get a few thousand hitsmonthly.
It takes time to build trust with Google, so don’t give up on that. Many folks created websites but got frustrated with the progress, so they gave up and forgot about the sites. A year later, they suddenly remembered the sites and found they ranked pretty well. It’s funny to see when thishappens.
Google Search Console is your base camp to measure your site. Link to the website you just created. Your site visits won’t be fast like TikTok. Google wants to trust you, but you need to show certain things. Google won’t promote your website when it doesn’t know about thewebsite.
Good places to research content are SEMRUSH and ahref. For the farming site example, search “lawn” and click on the top sites. Copy the root domain URL and paste it into the search bar on the SEMRUSH homepage.
Once you log in, you can see all the monitoring of that website. You can see their organic traffic over time and top organic keywords. You can repeat this process to find ten websites you want to model. Don’t copy them; use them as inspiration and standards for your competition.
If you have a product in mind, you can also research based on the product keyword rather than the competing website. On SEMRUSH/ahref, you can see the related keywords and what questions people search to land those keywords. You can see each keyword’s search intent. It can be navigational, informational, commercial, or transactional.
You can also see the keyword difficulty (KD). If the KD is red, it will be extremely hard to rank for. What you can do with those red keywords is to make them more specific to avoid competition. For example, if the keyword you initially want is “lawn mower,” you can research “best lawn mower for senior citizens” instead. Focus on making those popular keywords longer. To find keywords as a beginner, you can filter the results with KD<29%.
Out of the keywords you find, only some are good for the purpose of affiliate marketing. You can verify that using Amazon Associates. It’s also good to Google the easy keywords you just researched and saw what you are competing against. If you see the top results are big brands, that’s not good. However, suppose there are smaller brands or other affiliate sites on the first search result page. In that case, you can start your rabbit hole of repeating the whole process of “research content” in this step by searching for this specific affiliate site and seeing what keywords they used to rank up. The problem is that SEMRUSH only lets you search ten times for free daily. You will need to pay for the pro plan afterthat.
Here is my mental model for keyword research:
Step #5 WriteBlogs
Once you have those keywords, you can start writing with those in mind. For all the keywords and their variants, try to use as many as possible without sacrificing the quality of yourblog.
If you are building an affiliate site for farmers, you can have sections for seed review, livestock equipment, microgreen supplies, etc. Make sure the content is highly correlated. If your visitors are interested in one article, other articles should cater to the same visitor. A good length of an article is 1000–2000 words, but this is a derivative metric. The content quality itself is thegoal.
Once you are confident in your writing and current content creation workflow (This means you have at least 50 articles on the site), you can search for keywords with higher KD (as mentioned in the last step) and continue upping yourgame.
Step #6 Add Backlinks
Google trusts you through other sites’ trust in you. Backlinks are links from other websites pointing to your site. You can get them by writing guest posts and getting interviewed. Just find ways to collaborate with other bloggers.
Of course, you can create backlinks by building the funnel yourself. Depending on your niche, you can use LinkedIn, Twitter, or TikTok at the top of your funnel and redirect to your site. Those three platforms have a wider reach than other social media options, so they serve well as the top level of yourfunnel.
Step #7 Cost & Maintenance
That’s all for site building. If you follow this tutorial, the entire cost should be less than $10/month (hosting, SSL, plugins).
You can focus on writing one article per week with all backlinks set up. If you repeat this for a year, you will not regretit.
